Takayama and Shirakawa-go are in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, north of Nagoya. Takayama is known for its old merchant streets, and Shirakawa-go for its thatched gassho-style farmhouses. Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Nagoya you can reach both without changing cities, but the trip is long. This guide explains the routes, the buses, and whether a day trip is realistic.

Option 1: Train to Takayama
Take the JR Limited Express Wide View Hida from Nagoya Station to Takayama Station. The Hida Takayama tourism site gives about 140 minutes. The Shirakawa-go official site gives about 2 hours 20 minutes.
- This is the best choice if you want to spend time in Takayama first.
- The tourism site notes that the Japan Rail Pass is valid on the listed lines, except for certain Shinkansen trains.
- The official pages we checked do not give the fare or the number of trains per day, so check the JR Central timetable before you plan.
Train and bus tickets for Takayama are sold on Klook (affiliate links). Details are as listed on Klook on October 19, 2026. Prices and availability change, so check the booking page.
If you plan to continue to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa, a rail pass is worth checking.
Option 2: Direct bus to Shirakawa-go
The Shirakawa-go official site describes this route: walk about 5 minutes from Nagoya Station to the Meitetsu Bus Center, then ride an express bus for about 2 hours 30 minutes to the Shirakawago Bus Terminal. The site’s total estimate is about 2 hours 50 minutes.
- This is the simplest way if Shirakawa-go is your main goal.
- The official page does not name the operator, the fare or the timetable, and does not say whether a reservation is needed. Check the bus company and book early for busy dates.
Option 3: Highway bus to Takayama
The Hida Takayama tourism site says a highway bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center takes about 165 minutes. JR Tokai Bus, Meitetsu Bus and Nohi Bus operate this route. The page does not give fares or the number of buses.
From Takayama to Shirakawa-go
The Nohi Bus runs from Takayama Bus Terminal to Shirakawa-go in about 50 minutes, with 16 round-trip services a day, according to the Nohi Bus page.
- Reservations. In the timetable, services marked “R” need a reservation. Unmarked services do not. Mobile tickets are available only for buses that do not need a reservation.
- Fare. Takayama Bus Terminal to Shirakawa-go is listed as 2,800 yen one way. The same fare is listed from Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa. Children under 6 ride free but are charged if they take a seat.
- First and last buses from Takayama. The first is at 7:20 and the last at 19:00. The 19:00 bus does not run on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, August 13 to 15, or December 29 to January 3.
- Delays. The page warns that buses may be significantly delayed, by two hours or more, because of parking waits at Shirakawa-go, heavy snow or expressway closures.
- Luggage. Trunk space is shared and limited, so large items may not fit.
Reservations can be made through the Nohi Bus Reservation Center (0577-32-1688, 9:00 to 17:00) or online through Japan Bus Online.
Is a day trip from Nagoya realistic?
It can be done, but it is a long day with about five to six hours of travel, and any delay can affect your return. The official pages do not list the last train back to Nagoya, so check it before you decide. These points help:
- Choose a single main stop. Shirakawa-go on the direct bus, or Takayama by train. Doing both in one day leaves little time at either.
- Check the last return. Look up the last Wide View Hida to Nagoya and the last bus from Shirakawa-go before you book anything.
- Plan for delays. The bus company warns about delays caused by traffic and snow.
- Consider one night. Staying in Takayama lets you see the town early or late, when it is quieter.
If you prefer a tour
Viator lists two tours that cover Shirakawa-go (affiliate links). Details are as listed on Viator on October 18, 2026. Prices, times and availability change, so check the booking page.
- Shirakawa-go from Nagoya: one-day bus tickets, supplied by VIP Japan Tours. It is a self-guided option with a one-way or round-trip choice. In the listing, the bus leaves Nagoya at 6:45 and reaches Shirakawa-go at 10:35, and the return leaves at 14:15 and reaches Nagoya at 18:10. That is longer than the roughly 2 hours 30 minutes on the official Shirakawa-go page, so check the actual timetable. There is also a version that starts from Takayama. You can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a refund.
- One-day tour from Takayama covering Takayama and Shirakawa-go, supplied by Snow Monkey Resorts Tours. It is about 9 hours with an English-speaking guide, meeting at 9:00 outside the ticket gates of JR Takayama Station. The Takayama Jinya admission and the transport between the sights are included, and lunch is not. It also visits the Sanmachi district and the Miyagawa morning market. Because it starts in Takayama, you would first need to travel there from Nagoya.
What to see in Takayama
- Takayama Jinya. This is the former regional government office. On the official site, it is open 8:45 to 17:00 from April to October, and 8:45 to 16:30 from November to March. The ticket window closes 30 minutes before closing. It is closed from December 29 to January 3, and may close temporarily for inspections or storms. The official page lists 500 yen for an individual and free entry for visitors aged 18 or younger. Please confirm the current fee on the official site.
- The old town. The Hida Takayama site lists the Sanmachi Traditional Buildings Preservation Area among the main sights. See our Takayama guide for the markets, the old town and the opening hours.
What to know about Shirakawa-go
See our Shirakawa-go visitor guide for the houses you can enter, their fees, the seasons and practical tips. In short:
- It is a living village. The official site says people still live in the gassho-style buildings, and there are more than 100 large and small buildings. Please be respectful of residents.
- No train. The official site notes that there is no train service in Shirakawa-go, so visitors must use buses.
- Parking. If you drive, the Seseragi Park parking lot is open from 8:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30). A car costs 2,000 yen. A suspension bridge leads to the village in about 2 minutes.
- Winter light-up. The 41st light-up is planned for January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027. The official site says ordinary car parking for the first round is sold out, and accommodation booked through the tourist association is allocated by lottery. The Nohi Bus site also has a page for the light-up, so check it if you plan to go in winter.
If you want to continue to Kanazawa, see our 3-day itinerary via Takayama and Shirakawa-go.
Combining with your Nagoya plans
Because the trip takes most of a day, it works best as a separate leg. If you are planning a longer stay, see our 3-day Nagoya itinerary for the days with fixed dates, and our hotel guide for choosing a base. If you arrive by air, see our Centrair guide.
For a different day trip into the mountains, see our guide to walking the old Nakasendo road from Magome to Tsumago.
Tips
- Book the Shirakawa-go bus early on weekends, holidays and in autumn, since some services require a reservation.
- Keep the Ghibli Park date fixed first. Its tickets cannot be changed, so arrange a Takayama trip around it. See our buying guide.
- Carry light. Trunk space on the Nohi Bus is limited. Leave large bags at your Nagoya hotel.
