Takayama is a small city in Gifu Prefecture, in the mountains north of Nagoya. Morning markets
Takayama has two morning markets, which the tourism site describes as among the biggest in Japan.
- Jinya-mae market. It is held in front of Takayama Jinya. The official page says it started more than 300 years ago, and that only farmers may open stalls. Many stalls sell fresh vegetables, dried foods and homemade pickles.
- Miyagawa market. It runs for about 350 meters along the Miyagawa River, from Kaji-bashi Bridge to Yayoi-bashi Bridge, with about 60 shops and stalls. One side sells vegetables, fruit and pickles, and the other sells sweets and crafts.
Both markets are open until almost noon, and the tourism site suggests arriving around 6:00 if you are staying in Takayama. The number of stalls may drop to about 10 in rain or in winter, so winter visitors should expect a smaller market.
Sanmachi old town
The Sanmachi Traditional Buildings Preservation Area is in the Kamimachi part of the city. According to the tourism site, it is known for rows of wooden lattice townhouses, water channels under the eaves and sake breweries. You can recognize a brewery by the ball of cedar leaves hanging at the entrance. The area also has restaurants serving local ingredients and souvenir shops.
It is about a 12-minute walk from JR Takayama Station.
Takayama Jinya
The tourism site explains that this was the office of the governor during the Edo period, in official use from 1692 to 1969. It says Takayama Jinya is the only one of its kind left, out of more than 60 similar buildings once in Japan. The governors held trials and collected taxes here.
From the official Jinya website:
- Hours. 8:45 to 17:00 from April 1 to October 31, and 8:45 to 16:30 from November 1 to March 31. The ticket window closes 30 minutes before closing time.
- Closed. December 29 to January 3. It may also close for inspections or bad weather.
- Admission. 500 yen for an individual. Visitors aged 18 or younger are free, and staff may ask to see a student ID.
The tourism page for the same building shows an older fee and different hours, so use the Jinya’s own site for the current details.

A simple half-day order
This order follows the walking distances above.
1. Jinya-mae market, then Takayama Jinya. They are next to each other, and the market is at its best early in the morning. 2. Sanmachi old town. Walk the streets and stop at a brewery or a café. 3. Miyagawa market. Walk along the river if the market is still open before noon. 4. Lunch. The Sanmachi area has restaurants serving local ingredients.
Add the Hida Folk Village or the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall if you have the afternoon free.
