Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up 2027: Dates, Reservations and How to See It from Nagoya

Last checked: November 2, 2026, against the official Shirakawa-go Tourist Association page for the 41st light-up and Nohi Bus’s 2027 light-up pages. Sales dates, prices and availability change, and some sales had already started or sold out when we checked, so please confirm on the official pages. The winter light-up of Shirakawa-go’s gassho-zukuri farmhouses is one of the most photographed events in Japan, and it takes place on only four evenings a year. It is also hard to join: entry is by reservation only, and the easy options sell out in the autumn. This guide explains how the 2027 event works, what is already sold out, and what is realistic if you are based in Nagoya.

Key takeaways

  • The 41st light-up is held on four evenings in 2027: Monday, January 11 (a national holiday), and Sundays January 17, 24 and 31. It starts at 5:30 pm and ends at 7:30 pm.
  • Entry is by reservation only. Tickets are valid only on the day, and none are sold on the day. People without a reservation are turned away.
  • The viewing platform (Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory) is open only to people with an observatory ticket. These come only from a lodging plan in the village or from a bus operator’s observatory tour.
  • Nohi Bus’s tours all leave from Takayama, not Nagoya, and there is no regular bus back to Takayama after the light-up. From Nagoya, the realistic plan is to stay overnight in Takayama.
  • The sale for the January 31 bus tours opens on November 2, 2026 at 2:00 pm. The second round of reserved parking opens on December 1, 2026.
Shirakawa-go light-up 2027 facts

The four dates

According to the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, the light-up takes place in Ogimachi, Shirakawa village, on these evenings.

  • Monday, January 11, 2027 (a national holiday)
  • Sunday, January 17, 2027
  • Sunday, January 24, 2027
  • Sunday, January 31, 2027

The event may be canceled if a major snowstorm disrupts transport.

How entry works

The official page says the event is fully reservation-only. Your entry ticket is checked at a gate and worn on a neck holder. It is valid only on the day, and no tickets are sold on the day. The page warns that people who come without a reservation will be turned away.

The page lists five ways to take part.

1. Stay in the village. Lodging plans that include an observatory ticket are decided by lottery, not first come, first served. Applications ran from October 1, 2026 to October 31, 2026, and winners are announced on November 10, 2026. The application period is over. 2. Drive a private car with reserved parking. Reservations are for the Mizudashima parking lot, made online, by card only, first come, first served. Passenger cars only, up to 10 people. The first sale, on September 10, 2026, is sold out. The second sale opens on December 1, 2026 at 1:00 pm. The prices are 7,000 yen for 1 to 5 people and 10,000 yen for 6 to 10 people. The first sale was 6,000 yen and 9,000 yen. Reservations are non-refundable and non-transferable, except when the committee cancels the event because of heavy snow. This option has no observatory ticket. 3. Take a taxi with reserved parking. The taxi must be booked after the car parking reservation. There is no taxi pool, and no roadside drop-offs. Village taxi companies do not operate that day. This option has no observatory ticket either. 4. Take a highway bus tour. Book directly with one of five bus companies: Nohi, Kaetsunou, Toyama Chitetsu, Hokutetsu and Iruka. Sales for each date open on different days, listed below. 5. Take a travel agency bus tour. Plan details are posted on the association’s site on December 2, 2026 at 1:00 pm. These tours have no observatory ticket. Contact the agency directly.

Bus tour sale dates

All sales start at 2:00 pm.

  • January 11 departures: October 13, 2026
  • January 17 departures: October 19, 2026
  • January 24 departures: October 26, 2026
  • January 31 departures: November 2, 2026

The observatory

Only people with an observatory ticket can go up to the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory. These tickets are not sold separately. You get one from a lodging plan that includes it, or from a bus operator’s observatory tour. Visitors are split into three time slots, cannot choose their time, and must walk up. Tripods and pets are not allowed.

Nohi Bus tours from Takayama

Nohi Bus’s 2027 tours all depart from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center. The page does not list Nagoya as a departure point. There are three courses, with the same fare for adults and for children aged 6 to 12.

Course Fare What is included Observatory
A 13,000 yen Round-trip bus, admission to the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen open-air museum with zenzai (sweet red-bean soup) No
B 16,000 yen Round-trip bus, observatory ticket, local products Yes
C 14,000 yen Round-trip bus, bath ticket with towel at Hirase Onsen, local products No

Course B is the only one with an observatory ticket. Nohi says the walk to the observatory takes about 20 minutes each way and the path can be slippery. The tours return to Takayama in the evening.

  • Booking. Website only, no phone bookings. The limit is six people per application, and payment by card is required at booking. Nohi recommends registering on its booking site in advance.
  • Ticket exchange. Tickets must be exchanged at the Takayama Nohi Bus Center counter before boarding. The counter opens at 7:00 am on the travel day.
  • Rules. No boarding or alighting at intermediate stops, and no one-way use. Changes are not possible after payment. Cancellation before departure costs a 100 yen refund fee, and cancellations after departure are not accepted.
  • No other bus back. Nohi says there is no regular bus back to Takayama after the light-up, so the tour is the only way to stay for it.
  • Delays. Heavy snow or traffic can delay arrival and shorten the time in the village.

The booking site is japanbusonline.com, according to Nohi’s English page.

What is realistic from Nagoya

The tours we found leave from Takayama and return late in the evening. A day trip from Nagoya does not fit, because there is no practical way back to Nagoya after the light-up. These are the options we think are realistic. This is our suggestion, not an official plan.

  • Stay in Takayama. Take the JR limited express Hida from Nagoya to Takayama during the day, sleep in Takayama, and join a tour from there. Ekitan lists about 2 hours 30 minutes from Nagoya to Takayama. See our Nagoya to Takayama and Shirakawa-go guide and our Takayama old town guide.
  • Wait for the agency tours. The association says travel agency bus tours will be posted on December 2, 2026. We have not seen these plans yet, and the association says they have no observatory ticket. If one leaves from Nagoya, it would be the only day-trip option.
  • Drive. Reserve parking on December 1. Your car needs studless (snow) tires, and the roads can be icy. We do not recommend this if you are not used to driving on snow.
  • Use a different base. Hokutetsu, one of the five bus companies, is listed by the association. We did not check its routes.

Book the Takayama hotel as soon as you choose a date. Hotels fill up on light-up weekends, but we could not confirm availability.

Daytime visits on light-up days

On the event days, daytime sightseeing is restricted. The association says cars need no reservation and can enter from 8:00 am, with the last entry at 3:00 pm, and everyone must leave by 5:00 pm. Buses need a reservation through the Shirakawa-go bus parking site. The last entry is at 2:00 pm, and everyone must be out by 4:00 pm. If you only want the village by day, avoid these four days. See our Shirakawa-go visitor guide.

What to bring and the rules

  • Weather. The association says to expect temperatures from minus 10 to 0 degrees Celsius and icy roads.
  • Clothes. Warm clothing, waterproof winter boots with spikes, and a flashlight are recommended.
  • Drones. Banned.
  • Violations. The association says violators face permanent exclusion from the event.
  • Walking difficulties. A shuttle for people with mobility difficulties is arranged through the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association at +81-5769-6-1013.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to the light-up without a reservation? No. The event is reservation-only, and no tickets are sold on the day.

Can I see the light-up on a day trip from Nagoya? We could not find a Nagoya departure. The tours we found leave from Takayama. We suggest staying overnight in Takayama.

Is there still a way to get an observatory ticket? The lodging lottery has closed. The other route is a bus operator’s observatory tour, such as Nohi Bus course B. Check the sale dates above.

How much is parking? The second sale on December 1, 2026 is 7,000 yen for 1 to 5 people and 10,000 yen for 6 to 10 people. The first sale is sold out.

What if it snows heavily? The event may be canceled. Parking reservations are refundable only if the committee cancels because of heavy snow.
