What to check in winter

The Hikone Castle notice page lists these points as of October 2026.

  • A bridge in the garden. The Takahashi bridge in Genkyuen has been closed for replacement since November 25, 2025. The page does not say whether it has reopened.

  • Events. A parade around the castle on November 3 restricts vehicle access, and a marathon on November 8 closes roads around the castle.

A half-day plan

This is our suggestion, not an official route. Check the hours for your day.

1. Take a morning Shinkansen from Nagoya to Maibara, and then a local train to Hikone. It takes about 45 minutes. 2. Walk to the castle, visit the keep and then Genkyuen Garden. 3. Visit the museum if you have bought the set ticket. 4. Walk across the Kyobashi bridge for lunch on Yume Kyobashi Castle Road. 5. Return to Nagoya by local train and Shinkansen.

Practical tips

  • Buy the set ticket only if you will visit the museum. Check its closing days first.
  • Allow extra time for the steep path to the keep.
  • In winter, check the castle’s X account before you go.
  • Hikone is a good addition to a two-day Nagoya stay. See our 3-day Nagoya itinerary.
