Nagoya lights up every winter, and most of it is free. The best-known event is the Nagoya Christmas Market in Sakae. Around Nagoya Station and the Sakae-Minami and Osu area, streets are lined with lights from late fall into the new year. This guide separates what is confirmed for 2026-2027 from what is only last year’s pattern, so you can plan without surprises.

Nagoya Christmas Market (December 4 to December 25, 2026)
According to the official site, this is the 12th edition of the market, which was first held in 2013. It is spread across three places in Sakae: Hisaya-odori Park, Edion Hisaya Square and Angel Square.
- Dates. December 4 (Friday) to December 25 (Friday), 2026.
- Hours. On weekdays, 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm. On weekends and holidays, 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. On December 24 and 25, 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
- Cost. Entry is free. Food, goods and attractions cost money.
- What is there. The site describes German regional dishes, Christmas drinks and sweets, and a large real fir tree. Angel Square has new additions this year, including a crepe shop and a returning merry-go-round.
- Getting there. About 2 minutes on foot from Yabacho Station on the subway (Exit 6), or about 5 minutes on foot from Sakae Station (Exits 13 or 16).
- Bad weather. The site warns that hours may change or events may be canceled in severe weather.
- Contact. The organizer is Tokai Television. The site lists a business office number of 052-954-1107 (weekdays, Japanese).
The site is in Japanese only, and it does not give details such as stall counts or deposit rules for mugs. We therefore do not describe those.
From Nagoya Station, take the Higashiyama Line to Sakae. For fares and day passes, see our Nagoya transport guide.
Sakae-Minami and Osu Winter Light Display
Aichi Now lists this display for November 13, 2026 to February 21, 2027, with the lights on from 5:00 pm to midnight. It runs along Minami-Otsu-dori Street, from the Sakae intersection to the Kamimaezu intersection. It is a short walk from Sakae, Yabacho or Kamimaezu stations. It is a street display, and the listing does not mention an admission fee.
This is the easiest one to combine with the Christmas Market, because Sakae and Yabacho stations are close to both. If you go earlier in the day, the Osu shopping streets are a good stop. See our Atsuta Shrine and Osu guide.
Around Nagoya Station
These displays were held last season. Their 2026-2027 dates were not published when we checked.
- Hirokoji Street Express Light Display. Last season it ran from October 25, 2025 to January 15, 2026, with the lights on from 5:00 pm to 1:30 am. It lines the street from the Sasashima intersection near Nagoya Station to the Hirokoji Aoi intersection. Aichi Now says it is a short walk from Nagoya, Fushimi or Shinsakae-machi stations.
- Midland Christmas. Last season, Midland Square’s Christmas display ran from November 12 to December 25, 2025. Aichi Now says the building is a 1-minute walk from Nagoya Station. Its indoor illumination continued until March 1, 2026.
- Nagoya Lucent Tower. Last season, the winter light display ran from November 12, 2025 to January 16, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm. It is about a 5-minute walk north of Nagoya Station.
Because all three are near Nagoya Station, they are easy to see on your arrival or departure day.
Nagoya Port Winter Illumination
Last season this event ran from December 5 to December 25, 2025, in the Garden Pier area, in front of the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium. Aichi Now lists the hours as 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The listing mixes the 2024 and 2025 years, so treat the dates as a guide only. We have not seen 2026 dates yet. If you are visiting the aquarium, see our Port of Nagoya Aquarium guide.
Nabana no Sato
Nabana no Sato in Mie Prefecture is the region’s largest winter illumination and is a half-day or evening trip from Nagoya. The 2026-2027 season is October 17, 2026 to May 31, 2027. We have a full guide with tickets, trains and buses. See Nabana no Sato Illumination from Nagoya.
A simple evening plan
1. Start at Osu in the late afternoon and walk to Sakae. 2. Reach the Christmas Market (December 4 to December 25) or the Sakae-Minami lights once it is dark. 3. Eat at the market or in Sakae, then take the Higashiyama Line back to Nagoya Station. 4. If you are staying near the station, walk the Hirokoji or Meieki streets after you check whether they are lit.
This is our suggestion, not an official route. Check opening hours before you go.
Practical tips
- Dress warmly. Winter evenings in Nagoya are cold, and the market is outdoors.
- Weekends and the days right before Christmas are the busiest. Go on a weekday evening if you can.
- Check the Visit Nagoya and Aichi Now event pages in mid-November, when most new schedules appear.
