What to see

The official site says Meiji-Mura moved and rebuilt more than 60 buildings, 11 of which are Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and that most of the others are registered as tangible cultural properties. The official sight page lists the Imperial Hotel Central Entrance, the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Kure-za theater (an Important Cultural Property), the houses of the writers Mori Ogai and Natsume Soseki, a jail from Kanazawa, and the Rokugo River iron bridge, among others. The village is divided into five areas, called 1-chome to 5-chome.

The site says 2 to 3 hours is enough for a relaxed walk. For a careful visit, one day is not enough.

Practical tips

From the official site:

  • Lockers. Coin lockers are near the museum shop just inside the main gate. They cost 400 yen (small), 500 yen (medium) and 600 yen (large).
  • Audio guide. An English and Japanese audio guide pen is available for a deposit of 1,000 yen per day. You can also get pamphlets in English, Chinese and Korean at the main gate and the north exit.
  • Strollers and wheelchairs. Strollers are 500 yen per day. Manual wheelchairs are free. Both are lent at the ticket windows.
  • Slopes. The village uses the natural hills, so there are steep slopes and steps, and it is not fully barrier-free. Ask in advance if you have concerns.
  • Umbrellas are sold at the village shops for 660 yen.
  • Photography. Tripods are not allowed inside buildings, and you may not enter the woods to take pictures.

Rules

  • Smoking is allowed only in designated places.
  • Pets are not allowed, except assistance dogs.
  • Eating inside buildings is not allowed, except in restaurants.
  • Please do not bring balls, bats, rackets, skates, drones, tents or musical instruments. Wheeled toys, bicycles and kick scooters are not allowed, though wheelchairs and strollers are.
  • Swords and weapons, including toy ones, are not allowed.

When to go

The official site describes the seasons. Cherry blossoms bloom from late March, with about 1,000 trees blooming at different times until mid April. In summer there are evening events. Autumn brings red leaves. In winter the site says the buildings look beautiful in the clear air, and there are Christmas decorations and New Year ornaments. The hours are shorter from November to February, so go early.
